Do find it hard to keep your teeth clean? Gaining access to hard to reach places in your mouth can be aggravating and toothbrushes are not designed to clean the tiny crevices and grooves of your teeth, especially your molars. Unfortunately, when you can’t properly brush these parts of your teeth, tooth decay develops. However, individuals that have sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of their teeth have an added layer of protection against tooth deterioration and cavities.

Dental sealants are not obvious to the naked eye. They are composed of plastic resin material that toughens and bonds to the deep groves of your tooth’s surface. Sealants smooth out these tiny grooves, making it harder for plaque to settle in and stay for an unwelcomed, overextended visit. Patients that have sealants find that brushing their teeth is easier and they need fewer fillings.

Children benefit from sealants too. At New Concept Dental, we use sealants as a preventive measure after the eruption of permanent teeth. Like in adults, these sealants keep tooth decay at bay. In rare instances, we may recommend sealants for baby teeth, but it is more common to only seal permanent teeth.

Sealants are not designed to last forever. You can expect the sealants on your teeth to last from three to five year. However, it is not unusual for us to see adults that still have their childhood sealants intact. If your sealants become cracked, or you have had them for some time, check with us to see if your teeth need to be resealed.
