Sedation Dentistry - Wilmington, Delaware

If the very thought of visiting our office makes you break out in a cold sweat, sedation dentistry may perfect for you. We offer nitrous oxide and I.V. sedation dentistry at our Wilmington, Delaware, practice, so even the most anxious patients can comfortably undergo necessary dental treatment.

I.V. Sedation Dentistry

Whether you are a true dental phobic or just want to be able to snooze through your treatment and have no memory of it when you are done, I.V. sedation dentistry at our Wilmington, Delaware, office is for you. I.V. sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry," offers the best comfort and most controllable level of sedation.

With sedation dentistry, we can fix years worth of damage in just one comfortable visit.

We can fill your teeth with natural tooth-colored fillings, place or replace porcelain veneers, perform teeth whitening, and even restore sore gums to perfect health.

Before you undergo sedation dentistry at our Wilmington, Delaware, practice, Dr. Fay will sit down with you to answer all of your questions and make sure you are a good candidate for I.V. sedation. If you decide to proceed with treatment, we will schedule an appointment at your convenience.

On the day of your sedation dentistry treatment, we ask that you do not eat anything for at least six hours before your visit and that you have someone accompany you to our Wilmington office. When you arrive for your sedation dentistry appointment, you will be escorted into your own individual treatment room and offered a warm blanket. Once you are comfortable, an I.V. is started and you will begin to feel relaxed as the medication takes effect. Your vital signs will be monitored during your procedure to ensure your safety.

During treatment, you will be deeply relaxed, but you will be able to respond to simple requests. You will not be aware of your procedure, and you will not feel any discomfort. Once your sedation dentistry procedure is complete, you will wake up with no memory of your treatment. You will then be driven home and will relax for the rest of the day.

If any of these conditions sound all too familiar, sedation dentistry may be right for you:

  • Paralyzing fear of undergoing dental treatment
  • History of traumatic dental experiences
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Hate the sounds and smells associated with dental treatment
  • Multiple dental problems but don’t have the time to have your care completed in several visits
  • Avoid going to the dentist, even though you are experiencing discomfort
  • Experience sweaty palms or grip the armrests during treatment

Don’t let your smile - and your health - suffer because of your fear. Contact us today to learn more about I.V. sedation dentistry at our Wilmington, Delaware, practice.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry

For the less anxious patient who just needs a little help relaxing, nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas," is a sweet little helper. Nitrous oxide is an extremely safe, effective method of sedation dentistry.

Once you are comfortably seated in your treatment room, a soft rubber mask will be placed over your nose. You breathe in and out through your nose as you would normally breathe while the machine regulates the amount of nitrous oxide and oxygen you receive. The level of sedation can be adjusted to match each individual patient’s needs.

When you are completely relaxed, we will begin treatment. Because nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation dentistry technique, you will always be conscious and completely under control. You will also be able to let Dr. Fay know if you are feeling any discomfort or uncomfortable sensations. If for some reason you feel uncomfortable, the nitrous oxide can be discontinued, and within five minutes you should feel the effects disappear. Once your procedure is complete, you will be given pure oxygen for about five minutes. You should return to “normal” very quickly, and you will be able to drive yourself home.
